In Episode 687 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” we’re pleased to welcome back to the podcast a popular Paleo mom blogger and brand new author Peggy Emch from “The Primal Parent” blog. She was originally on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” in early 2012 back in Episode 549 and now Peggy returns to the show to discuss her fabulous new book Primal Moms Look Good Naked: A Mother’s Guide to Achieving Beauty through Excellent Health.

Listen to Peggy as she explains her philosophy regarding the process of being pregnant, what a healthy fertility diet looks like, how to feed your children a healthy diet, a few TMI but oh-so-important parts of what happens after childbirth, how a primal way of eating and a few complementary strategies along the way can make a happy, healthy baby happen for your family and SO MUCH MORE! If you or someone you know is pregnant or wants to have a baby, then you’ll want to hear what Peggy Emch has to say.

PrimalMoms Listen to Peggy Emch share what being a Primal mom is about:

  • While writing her book on pregnancy, she got pregnant again
  • Why she decided to write a book about being a primal parent
  • She wanted to help women not struggle with pregnancy woes
  • Her own struggle with PCOS, Celiac disease and getting pregnant
  • The women in Paleo look on the outside like they’re perfect
  • People are recognizing that they’ve figured it out now
  • What she sees as the primary differences between primal and Paleo
  • Paleo has a lot of “legal” foods that wouldn’t have been eaten
  • Almond and coconut flour cookies would not have been consumed
  • Our ancestors weren’t grinding massive amounts of nuts for bread
  • Too many Paleo dieters center on these kind of baked goods
  • But there is a large segment of Paleo that loathes this trend
  • She has “had phases of including dairy” because it works for her
  • The arguments against dairy make a lot of sense too
  • I found some raw cream from a local farmer and LOVE IT
  • Her diet has been “very high-fat” for the past 8 years
  • The mixed messages of what eating for fertility actually means
  • People think infertility is just “bad luck that comes their way”
  • CDC says 10% of women are infertile and this is “not natural”
  • You need fats, vitamins and minerals to be able to conceive
  • Start by eating a nutrient-dense diet to balance hormones
  • Hormone imbalances, endometriosis lead to fertility problems
  • Lowering insulin can happen through a variety of ways
  • You’ve got to lower the number of sugar, carbs you consume
  • Exercise during pregnancy is important for the woman and baby
  • You can and should exercise, lift weights while pregnant
  • Diet impacts the baby even while the fetus is still growing
  • Stretch marks can be a major eyesore for post-pregnancy
  • This “scar” happens when you don’t take care of herself
  • Strengthen your connective tissue and balance your hormones
  • Once you have stretch marks, they’ll never be gone but…
  • If you eat high-fat, nutrient-dense, the scars can “blend in”
  • Vericose veins and hemorrhoids can be prevented during pregnancy
  • The lining of the veins stretch out when it becomes weak
  • Conventional wisdom says don’t get constipated, wear support hose
  • The issue is to get strong tissues by eating a proper diet
  • Constipation is a common problem that men and women deal with
  • What the heck is diastasis recti?! You need to know!
  • It takes away “your feminine shape” when muscle is compromised
  • Depression takes away the joy of being pregnant
  • Women who are depressed sleep a lot or are completely frazzled
  • She “doesn’t engage with her child properly” when depressed
  • The benefits to a woman’s body that happens during pregnancy
  • Nothing is more primal than to recognize maternal instincts
